Protect the Future of Creativity and Innovation!

by Lydia Makepeace

The future of creativity is being threatened. Changes to the way we access the Internet are being considered. If enacted creative ideas and innovation will surely suffer. Here’s what you need to know -

What’s at stake?

The open Internet, or net neutrality - the Internet as we know it.

"The Internet is built on the principle of openness. For the price of an Internet connection, anyone can spread new ideas or start a business — even spark a new industry.” - Althea Erickson

What is net neutrality?

"Net neutrality (also network neutrality or Internet neutrality) is the principle that Internet service providers and governments should treat all data on the Internet equally, not discriminating or charging differentially by user, content, site, platform, application, type of attached equipment, and modes of communication.” - Wikipedia

What does that mean in plain English?

Here’s a great little video that explains net neutrality in simple terms - and in under 2 minutes!

Why should I care?

The proposed rule changes would allow broadband companies such as Comcast and Time Warner Cable to charge premiums to big companies, like Netflix, for faster access (quicker loading times) to customers, thus creating a “fast lane” for big companies who can afford it and a "slow lane” for the rest of us, including small businesses and startups who would lack the funds to compete and thrive.

Here’s a hilariously informative video from John Oliver’s show Last Week Tonight further explaining net neutrality and why it matters.
