Katherine Dunham, known as the “Matriarch of Black dance,” was an American dancer, choreographer, and anthropologist. As an anthropology student at the University of Chicago she traveled to the Caribbean to study its dance forms particularly in Haiti. Her research and development of the Dunham Technique revolutionized American and European dance.
