This work of conceptual art was inspired by my own body image insecurities and a need to visually retaliate against an increasingly absurd cultural standard of beauty. A J.Crew catalogue with a pair of jeans called “The Toothpick” provided the perfect opportunity. This mixed media assemblage is titled “You Can Be a Toothpick Too” and features a small round mirror that reflects the face of the viewer.
It’s time to stop moralizing clothing sizes and tying one’s self confidence to an arbitrary number on the scale.
Think of all the beautiful women in your life who you admire and respect. Chances are they come in all shapes and sizes. Are you allowing your mind to bully your body in ways you would never allow anyone else to attack those you hold near and dear?
