Born into slavery Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom in the North then became the most famous conductor on the Underground Railroad rescuing other enslaved people. During the Civil War she was an armed scout and spy for the Union Army.

Fannie Lou Hamer was a voting rights, women's and civil rights activist. After being assaulted by police while exercising her right to vote she went on to help thousands of Black Mississippians become registered voters.
