This painting launched the start of the Affirm Black Women portrait series, a life changing project I began in 2018 to highlight the work and words of Black women. It features a stack of books written by Black women who have educated, inspired, and transformed my understanding of the world.
Examine the writers and books on your reading list. Who are the authors of the majority of books on your library shelves? Who is included and excluded from the required reading in your literature classes? Whose stories are being told?
